Ride to Run

After a busy winter and spring (I got married this spring, sold my house, and moved), and a disappointed Crusher, I really wasn't sure where I was going. I had planned to compete in the half Ironman in St. George, but it conflicted with my wedding date (and I was NOT going to juggle the two!). I left Beaver Utah with no plans - no races, nothing to train for, zip. I was tired, too... Really tired.

And then I ran. The Monday after the Crusher I was in Chicago on business, and Tuesday morning a couple of us went for a run. It was short (2 miles) and in my 5's and my legs were sore but I ran. And surprisingly I felt great!

These are similar to my Five Fingers. Not a lot of padding, but they have been super-helpful in resolving IT band issues.

When I got home from Chicago, I essentially just kept running. I can't explain it, but since the Crusher all I have wanted to do is run! I'm down at least 6 pounds, too (something I couldn't do just riding). I've enjoyed running so much that I've set two goals: 1) to run a half marathon Aug 31 (the Layton Syracuse Marathon) and 2) to run a full marathon in December.

With all the additional miles, my biggest worry has been knees and my hams. Last year I introduced strength training too hard/too fast and injured my mid-hams. And as the season progressed, my knees were getting more sore with every run. After a bunch of research, I decided to pick up a pair of Altra Zero-drop Instinct 1.5's. They're really ugly, but running in them is like running on memory foam! I'm still just getting used to them, but so far they've been great.

Altra Zero-Drop "Instinct 1.5" in the ugliest orange you'll never love... But they feel great!

Like I said, I can't explain it but I run. A lot. And I'm enjoying it.

Crusher Report

This is a placeholder for my long-overdue report on this year's Crusher in the Tushar. Honestly, it's been difficult to write. My training suffered a lot this year, so I felt underprepared. I bettered my time a measly 20 minutes, primarily because I did not stop once. The ride wasn't much fun; in fact, it was the first suffer-fest that I didn't at least take some pride in how much I could suffer. I finished 8th from last, too, which means pride plays little if any factor!
